NECO: Katsina ranks last

Katsina State has rankdr last  among the 36 states of the federation in the recent Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted  by the National Examination Council (NECO).

The ranking shows Abia State leading the pack while Kano State takes the second to the last position.

The results of 828,284 candidates that sat for the examination,  representing 60.55% of the total number that took the examination, got credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language.

NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof Dantana Wushishi, disclosed this while releasing the results before newsmen at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State on Thursday.

Further statistics show that 1,147,597 candidates, representing 83.90%, got credits in five subjects and above, not necessarily including English Language and Mathematics,

According to the Registrar, out of 1,376,423 candidates who registered for the examination, only 1,367,736 sat for it — 702,112 of that number being male and 665,624 female

“The number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024 is 8,437 as against 12,030 in 2023, which shows a reduction of 30.1 percent.”

He further revealed that 40 schools were found to have been involved in mass cheating in 17 states while 21 supervisors in 12 states have been recommended for blacklisting for various reasons, including poor supervision, aiding and abetting malpractice, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence.

Speaking about the performance analysis by state, Wushishi said Abia State led other states as 83.40% of its candidates scored five credits and above, including Mathematics and English language, while Katsina State placed last on the table with 2.42%.

“The state (Abia) also leads in candidates with five credits and above irrespective of Mathematics and English language 95.84%.

“For least performed states with five credits and above including mathematics and English language, Katsina State is bottom on the table with 42.00% with just 2.42% ahead of Kano which came second to last with 44.42
