Minimum Wage: FG establishes committee to address adjustments

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established a 16-member committee to address salary adjustments related to the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024.

 The committee was inaugurated by Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of Service of the Federation emphasizing the need for a balanced and fair salary structure for federal civil servants following the new minimum wage increase.

Vanguard newspaper that the minimum wage has risen to N70,000, marking a 133.33% increase from the previous N30,000. This substantial increase necessitates adjustments for other staff categories to align with the new wage structure. To facilitate this, the government has formed the committee, which includes eight representatives from the government and eight from labour unions.

The government side of the committee, chaired by Walson-Jack, includes members from various bodies such as the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, and other key agencies. The labor representatives consist of leaders from major unions like the Joint Negotiating Council and the Nigerian Labour Congress.

The committee’s primary tasks are to negotiate the salary adjustments and develop a framework for implementing the new N70,000 minimum wage. Walson-Jack underscored the importance of this assignment in maintaining industrial peace and harmony, expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to serve the public and the nation effectively.

Mr. Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, expressed gratitude for the committee’s formation. He viewed it as a positive step towards finalizing discussions on the minimum wage and ensuring fair salary payments. Anthony emphasized the collaborative effort between labor and government to achieve equitable outcomes for Nigerian workers
