In Nigeria, badminton stands out as one of the most rapidly expanding sports, second only to football in popularity. Kebbi state is joining this wave of enthusiasm, actively embracing the sport’s growing appeal.
Although badminton has often been perceived as a sport for the elite, its allure has captivated the younger generation in Kebbi. The game transcends age, offering a vibrant space for both young and old to gather, interact, and foster ties.
Historically, the absence of an indoor venue has posed a significant challenge for badminton enthusiasts in Kebbi. The sport thrives indoors, where players can enjoy optimal playing conditions. Despite this limitation, badminton has long enjoyed a presence in all the local government areas of Kebbi state, gaining traction even prior to the rise of the Fatauchi family from the Zuru Emirate, who gained acclaim for their skills at national and international tournaments in the 1980s.
For years, Kebbi’s players have struggled with the lack of a dedicated indoor facility, essential for mastering the game and managing the shuttlecock’s flight effectively. Since Kebbi state was established in 1991, no administration had prioritized the construction of such a venue—until now.
The arrival of Dr. Nasir Idris as Governor in 2023 has marked a turning point. A passionate badminton player himself and advocate for sports generally, he has enthusiastically taken on the mantle of revamping sports infrastructure in the state. Without prompting, Dr. Idris championed the construction of an indoor badminton hall in the state capital to support the increasing number of promising young athletes eager to compete at local and national levels, as well as to accommodate middle-aged and veteran players looking to maintain their health and well-being.
The project, which cost just N48 million, is heralded as a wise investment considering the significant benefits for a rapidly growing community of players and enthusiasts dedicated to the sport.
With this new facility, Kebbi is ready to host a variety of competitions across all age groups, firmly establishing itself as a significant player in the sports arena.
