In Israel: mention “Jesus,’ go to jail

A bill prohibiting the mention or discussion of Jesus Christ in Israel by Christians is being proposed by some members of Israel’s Parliament.

 The Punch Newspaper reports that the law will make it a criminal offence to persuade anyone to convert to another religion. The proposed bill would also outlaw telling people about Jesus in Israel as well as jail terms for anyone who does that.

The lawmakers who proposed the bill are members of the United Torah Judaism Party. They submitted the bill in January this year and the bill is currently waiting for approval from the Israeli Senate. If approved, the punishment for having conversations about Jesus with Israelis, whether in person or online, would be one-year imprisonment if with an adult, but two years if with someone under 18.

But Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has, however, allayed fears in a Tweet on his official Twitter on Wednesday saying his government will not sign any law that will harm the Christian community in the country
