The university is 64 years old today, Sunday, 4th October, 2026, having been established on 4th October, 1962.

Historically, the institution came into being when in 1959 the Ashby Commission on Post-School Certificate and Higher Education recommended that a university should be created in Zaria to serve the then Northern Region of Nigeria.

The university was named after Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, who as the first Chancellor of the university, performed its opening ceremony on 4th October, 1962.

Celebrating the university’s 64th anniversary, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, explained that the institution had since its establishment made significant contributions to national, regional and global developments.

Prof Ahmed expressed profound appreciation to parents, guardians, alumni and numerous well-wishers for the enduring bond between the university and the wider society it serves.

He immensely appreciated His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the far-reaching reforms and strategic interventions across the education sector, many of which have had a direct and positive impact on ABU.

The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the university alumni body, both as individuals and as organised groups for their tremendous support in diverse ways.

He specially expressed gratitude to the Governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina States for their consistent engagement, steadfast support and unwavering commitment to meeting the university at its points of need.

Prof Ahmed equally acknowledged the fatherly guide of the Emir of Zazzau as well as the support of the Minister of Education, the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor, members of Council and Senate, staff and students.

He said as the university keeps on moving progressively the institution now looks to receiving more support from its numerous alumni and other stakeholders to remain committed to serving the nation and humanity in general.
