A speech delivered at the handover ceremony of the handover of Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital, Kafanchan, to the Federal Government for its upgrade to a Federal Medical Centre

I welcome the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq  Adekunle Salako’s commendation of our prompt approval and facilitation of the transfer.

His recognition of Kaduna as a leading example of healthcare reform, and a state firmly aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, strengthens our resolve to translate cooperation between governments into lasting improvements in people’s lives.

I am particularly encouraged by the Minister’s commitment to addressing our request for the protection and appropriate integration of the hospital’s existing staff into the federal system.

Their experience, dedication and institutional knowledge are indispensable to a successful transition. Safeguarding their welfare must accompany our shared responsibility to preserve continuity of care and strengthen the institution they have faithfully served.

For the people of Kaduna State, particularly Kaduna South Senatorial District, this development answers a longstanding aspiration for greater access to tertiary healthcare. The goodwill expressed by community representatives and other speakers reflects both the significance of this moment and the expectations it carries. We understand those expectations and remain determined to ensure that this partnership delivers tangible benefits to patients and families.

I express our profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for their partnership. We look forward to sustained investment in infrastructure, modern diagnostic and treatment equipment, and skilled personnel to enable the hospital to fulfil its expanded mandate.

This milestone honours the memory of Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa through a purpose worthy of his legacy: service to humanity. Its enduring value will be measured by lives saved, suffering relieved and families spared the burden of travelling long distances for specialist care.

We will continue to pursue a healthcare system that protects human dignity and gives every resident, irrespective of location or financial circumstances, a fair opportunity to receive the care they need, with compassion, confidence and the assurance of professional attention.
