The Kaduna State Government has established a specialist Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area in a major step towards addressing shortages of specialist nurses and improving medical services across the state.

This is as Governo Uba Sani, CON,  signed into law an Executive Bill Wednesday.
The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, describing the legislation as a strategic investment in skilled manpower development under the Governor’s ongoing health sector reforms.
The institution is expected to expand advanced nursing training, produce specialists in critical fields and improve maternal and child care, emergency response and intensive care services across Kaduna State.
Under the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences, Rigasa Law, 2026, the institution will operate as a specialised tertiary training college, with its main campus in Rigasa and provisions for additional campuses, schools and training centres, subject to regulatory approvals.
Maiyaki explained that the College will offer programmes in midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, perioperative nursing, paediatric nursing, accident and emergency nursing, intensive care nursing, public health nursing, as well as nursing education and administration.
He said the Governor’s assent represents a significant investment in developing the skilled workforce required to address critical personnel shortages, strengthen clinical expertise and improve patient outcomes.
Beyond professional training, the College will promote research, continuous professional development and partnerships with teaching hospitals, universities, specialist facilities and other accredited institutions.
The law also establishes a Governing Council to provide strategic direction and institutional oversight, alongside an Academic Board responsible for academic standards, research and professional training.
All programmes will be subject to the accreditation and regulatory requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant authorities.
The Commissioner noted that the legislation complements Governor Uba Sani’s broader reform agenda, including the upgrading of 255 primary healthcare centres, rehabilitation of 16 general hospitals and sustained investments in workforce recruitment and development.
He emphasised that investments in medical infrastructure must be matched by qualified professionals capable of delivering specialised services, particularly in underserved communities.
Maiyaki added that the College would help build a sustainable pipeline of specialist nurses, enhance institutional capacity and contribute to better health outcomes for generations to come.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Uba Sani towards developing the institution into a centre of excellence for specialist nursing education, research and clinical training, further advancing the Governor’s vision of accessible, quality and people-centred medical services.
