The Nigerian government is planning to rebuild six key seaports across the country and improve Nigeria’s maritime competitiveness.
This was revealed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola at the 2026 Transport Industry Summit of the Transport Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Lagos.
The rebuilding programme, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will cover Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos, Onne Port, Rivers Port, Calabar Port and Warri Port.
Oyetola said the initiative would involve reconstructing quay walls, deepening port channels, replacing obsolete cargo handling equipment and expanding digital operations. The reforms are expected to reduce cargo delays, improve vessel turnaround time and lower logistics costs.
He also highlighted improvements in port performance, noting that Tin Can Island Port and Lagos Port Complex were among the world’s most improved container ports between 2020 and 2025.
The minister said continued investment, stronger regulation, security and digitalisation would be essential to achieving sustainable improvements in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
