Heavy clashes between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Yemeni government forces supported by Saudi Arabia have killed 154 people over the past two days, military sources from both sides told AFP on Tuesday, marking one of the deadliest escalations in the country’s long-running conflict in recent months, reports Aljazeera News.
The fighting, concentrated in several front-line districts, has seen both sides trade heavy artillery and rocket fire, with casualties reported among combatants on both sides. Medical and military sources warned that the toll could rise further as clashes continue and bodies are recovered from contested areas.
The renewed violence underscores the fragility of efforts to end Yemen’s civil war, which has devastated the country since 2014 and triggered what the United Nations calls one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition backing the government since 2015, while the Houthis have received support from Iran.
