As part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical services in the country, the Federal Government has upgraded Riyom General Hospital in Plateau State to a National Trauma Centre It will operate as an outpost of the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
The development was announced during the launch of the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System in Riyom.
The initiative is designed to improve access to emergency healthcare, particularly for people in communities where medical facilities are difficult to reach.
As part of the intervention, 15 ambulances have been deployed to Plateau State. The fleet comprises five conventional emergency ambulance buses and 10 tricycle ambulances intended to serve rural and hard-to-reach communities.
The Federal Government said the emergency system will provide free emergency transportation through the Plateau State emergency medical service, while vulnerable patients can receive up to 48 hours of free emergency treatment through the federal tertiary facility pathway.
