The Divisional Police officer, DPO of Rimi Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State, CSP Muhammad Sani Sagir was killed in an ambush by suspected bandits Friday morning.
Security sources said CSP Sagir and his team had responded to a distress call over cattle rustling around 10:00 a.m.
The operatives reportedly pursued the suspects into a nearby forest to recover the stolen livestock when they came under heavy gunfire.
The DPO sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to them, while three other police officers and a woman were wounded in the attack.
The assailants reportedly escaped with additional cattle and livestock.
He stated that according to local sources one bandit was killed during the confrontation, and some of the rustled animals were recovered.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
