The Government of Katsina  has requested to takeover the Lambar Rimi wind power project from the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The request was made by the Governor of Katsina State, Dr Dikko Umar Ra,da in a letter to President Bola Tinubu and the minister of power.

In a statement on Thursday, Isah Miqdad, Senior Special Assistant to the governor on digital media, said the action signifies potential advancement in the near future.

“The Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, has written a letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Power requesting the Federal Government to handover the abandoned Lambar Rimi Wind Power Project to the Katsina State Government,” he said.

Awarded in June 2009, by the ministry of power, the Lambar Rimi windmill project, with 37 turbines, is designed to generate 10 megawatts (MW) of electricity for Katsina state.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the project initially had a 12-month timeline for completion, but due to security-related incident in 2012 at the peak of execution, the work was delayed for a protracted time.

The project has since missed several completion deadlines.

On July 4, Tinubu decried Nigeria’s power generation capacity — describing it as shameful.

The president called for the collaboration of stakeholders to increase Nigeria’s on-grid electricity capacity
