Over 5,000 prisoners on death raw in Nigeria

Out of about 80,000 inmates in Nigeria’s correctional centers, 5,000 are on the death raw and mostly by hanging

This was disclosed by the Controller General Nigerian Correctional Service (NcoS) Haliru Nababa on Tuesday in Abuja at the launch of the ‘Court Administration and Management and Case Management and The Reforming Pre-Trial Detention in Nigeria Phase II Projects’ organized by the Public and Private Development Center (PPDC) and United States Government.

Nababa represented by Assistant Controller General (ACG), Custody, of the NcoS, Gimba Manu Dumbulwa, also said that they have waited for decades without their sentences being carried out due to the non-signing by state governors and other authorities reluctant to sign their death warrants which he said is contributing to prison congestion.
