Gov Abba Yusuf/NNPP appeal commences tomorrow

The Court of Appeal is set to commence th hearing of the appeal filed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State where he challenges the nullification of his election by the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal earlier this year.

The notice of the suit, bearing the case number CA/KN/EP/GOV/KAN/34/2023, has generated immense public interest and anticipation, as it marks a crucial juncture in Kano’s political landscape.

The principal parties involved in the legal battle include Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his political party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Recall that on September 20, 2023 the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal nullified Governor Yusuf’s election, citing 165,663 invalid votes that were not signed or stamped by INEC.

INEC had initially declared him the victor of the March 18 election, with 1,019,602 votes, ahead of his opponent, Nasiru Gawuna, who garnered 890,705 votes.

However, the tribunal’s decision led to a significant shift in the electoral landscape.

By deducting the 165,663 disputed votes from Yusuf’s tally, his count was reduced to 853,939 votes, putting him more than 30,000 votes behind Gawuna.

Consequently, the tribunal declared Nasiru Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the rightful winner of the gubernatorial election, ordering INEC to withdraw Governor Yusuf’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Gawuna.

In response to the tribunal’s decision, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the NNPP swiftly filed an appeal, seeking to overturn the verdict in their favour and retain the governor’s office.
