The Chairman at the annual Speech and Prize Giving Day of Scintillate International Schools in Kaduna on Saturday, said one has to be concern about the children, particularly youth being used as political errand boys in perpetuating thuggery and violence.

He called on parents to be responsive to their duty at ensuring that children are of good behaviour, as this is solely their responsibility, and tasked the Government to enforce the laws already in place to guide the conduct of citizens, saying “all hands must be on deck to ensure things are done the right way.”

In his presentation titled: “Curbing moral decay: The Role of Parents, School and Government” a parent and media practitioner, Mohammed Lawal Maikudi, blamed parents, school and Government for the high moral decadence in the country.

Even as he blamed the school system for failure in the discharge of its duty of molding the character of the young ones; he also criticized the parents for paying less or no attention in molding the character of their children due to some factors such as pursuing economic or social interest or both.

According to him, Government has a very crucial role in moral teaching in the society; while noting that there were good policies and laws put in place to govern the activities of all Nigerians, he said the government was not doing enough to ensure compliance by citizens.

“Corruption has eaten deep into almost every sector and level of government and wherever there is corruption, it is hard for justice and equity to flourish. And wherever there is no justice and equity, the society decays,” he said.

On the way forward, the veteran, said moral decay could be curbed through guidance and counseling, reward for good behaviour and punishments for infractions.

Earlier, Principal of the school, Mr. Chuks Mbakwe, said Scintillate International Schools is one of the schools in Kaduna that believes in giving qualitative education to it’s students/pupils.

He said the school also believe in raising disciplined children who can face the challenges of tomorrow, and become both useful to themselves, parents and the society at large.

On the choice of topic for discussion, Mr. Mbakwe, said it’s a known fact that moral decay is the problem of the society today, but the question has been who is to be blame?

He posited that both the students, parents and the Government all have a role to play, pointing out that, “when we play our role respectively the children and the society would be better off.”
