The establishment of the Kaura Gwandu College of Nursing and Midwifery Science has been commended by the Provost,  Dr Muhammad Murtala Musa, describing it as an important addition to the state’s healthcare education sector.

Dr Murtala Musa made the commendation on Tuesday during an interactive session with media.

He explained that the establishment of the college had helped ease the admission pressure on the State College of Nursing Sciences, Birnin Kebbi, while creating additional employment opportunities and stimulating business activities in the state.

The Provost reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that the institution produces qualified and competent nursing and midwifery professionals to strengthen healthcare delivery.

He noted that the Governor followed the necessary procedures before establishing the institution, a development he said had enabled the college to operate in line with its academic calendar.

“The first set of students is currently writing examinations, while the first batch of ND/HND graduates is expected in 2028,” he said.

Dr Murtala Musa disclosed that the college had admitted no fewer than 172 students, with 80 currently sitting for the National Diploma (ND) examination. He added that arrangements had been concluded for the admission of the second batch of students.

He further revealed that the institution had attracted students from other states, including Imo, Enugu, Niger, Ogun and Kaduna, among others, reflecting its growing reach beyond Kebbi State.

According to him, the college is equipped with qualified lecturers, standard laboratories, a library and information and communication technology (ICT) facilities, acknowledging the state government’s provision of essential infrastructure, including staff quarters, male and female hostels, and security arrangements for the institution.

The Provost added that the college was committed to promoting discipline among students, particularly in enforcing dress codes and preventing examination malpractice.

While appreciating the Governor’s support, Dr Murtala-Musa appealed for additional assistance in the provision of rural posting allowances, teaching allowance and the deployment of more security personnel to enhance the safety of the institution and its community.

He also called on the people of Kebbi State to support government policies and programmes, particularly those aimed at expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce.
