Clergyman, 2 security personnel arrested over plot to kidnap wives of prominent bishops in Jos.

A clergyman and two security operatives were nabbed by the Plateau State Police Command operatives for plotting to kidnap family members of two prominent bishops in Jos, Plateau State capital.

The suspects were arrested following intelligence received by the command regarding the alleged criminal conspiracy and an attempt to abduct the women.

According to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred at about 2:10 p.m. on August 7, 2026.

The police identified one of the suspects as 42-year-old Rev. Hassan Yunisim Mijah of Tudun Wada, Jos North Local Government Area

The command alleged that Mijah conspired with Sgt. Ezra Sunday, a Nigerian Air Force personnel, and OS Usman Khalid, a Nigerian Navy personnel, both attached to Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace in Jos, to kidnap the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi.

The two bishops are residents of the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.

Following the intelligence, operatives of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit, led by the unit’s commander, launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of the three suspects.

The police said the suspects confessed to the alleged offence during interrogation.

The command said Operation Enduring Peace had been formally notified of the arrest of the two personnel attached to the operation.

Investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged conspiracy and identify and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal network
