The man accused of posing as the Director-General of the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council. Adeniyi Adeyemi has been arrected by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
This was disclosed by the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, stating that operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) from Abuja apprehended Adeyemi at a hideout in Osun State. He is expected to be transferred to Abuja for further investigation and prosecution.
A video of the arrest showed Adeyemi dressed in a light blue traditional outfit while police officers questioned him. When asked to identify himself, he reportedly replied that he had already provided his name several times.
The arrest came only hours after a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a warrant for his arrest following his failure to appear for trial on charges of conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation. The court dismissed his claim that he could not attend because he feared for his life and adjourned the case until September 30, 2026.
According to investigators, Adeyemi allegedly operated a non-existent federal agency known as the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council. He is accused of forging official government documents, including an appointment letter allegedly signed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to give legitimacy to the fake agency.
Police further alleged that he established several bank accounts in the agency’s name and attempted to secure official support, including visas for foreign travel, while operating from an office at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
The Presidency has maintained that the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council is not a recognised government agency.
If convicted, Adeyemi could face up to 21 years imprisonment for forgery and an additional three years for impersonation under Nigerian law.
Just a day before his arrest, Adeyemi appeared on television, insisting he was not on the run. He claimed he feared for his safety, alleged that he paid ₦400 million to secure the position, and called for an independent investigation into the matter.
