The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon.Bilyaminu Moriki, has been impeached and replaced with Hon Bashar Gummi as the interim speaker.
Hon Moroki was impeached by 18 out of 24 members through a motion moved by Hon.Nasiru Abdullahi representing Maru Constituency.
The verdict of impeachment was decided during an emergency session convened on Thursday night, the majority of the members reached a consensus to impeach the speaker.
The legislators cited the Speaker’s alleged failure to address the state’s security challenges as the primary reason for his removal, asserting that the House had not taken adequate measures to combat the prevailing insecurity.
They called upon the newly appointed interim Speaker to prioritize efforts to combat banditry, which has severely impacted on socio-economic activities in the state.
Shamsudeen Basko, representing Talata Mafara Constituency, emphasized the urgency of addressing insecurity, highlighting the frequent killings and abductions plaguing their constituents.
He stated, “We must take decisive action to defend our people against armed bandits who are brazenly attacking our communities. It is imperative that we call upon the government to intervene immediately to safeguard our citizens.”
But reacting to the confusion over what happened to the Speaker, the member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Talata Mafara constituency, Shamsudeen Bosko, said that Speaker of the state Assembly was not been impeached but currently on suspension.
Bosko says the House standing rules give them the powers to elect speaker Pro-Tempo to preside the sitting in the absence of the Speaker Pending the outcome of the crisis.
Bosko further said that the eighteen members have shutdown the Assembly as the mace is with them. However, Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki, according to Shamsudeen Bosko might return to his seat if the crisis is resolved or if he was not impeached by the eighteen out of the twenty four lawmakers.
