Gaza massacre: UN calls for ceasefire; US, others vote against it

Worried by the destructions in Gaza as a result of air bombardments and ground offensive of Israeli Defence Forces, the United Nations, General Assembly voted overwhelmingly calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Although the resolution lacks legal binding, it serves as a significant reflection of the global perspective on the conflict, according to Sky News report.

The resolution’s are welcome by Hamas and urged the international community to exert pressure on Israel to adhere to the ceasefire.

A senior official from the militant group, Izzat al Risheq has released a statement demanding that Israel halt what they perceive as aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.

With more than three-quarters of the 193-member assembly supporting the ceasefire call, 23 members, including the UK, abstained, and 10 countries voted against it. The United States and Israel, arguing that a ceasefire primarily benefits Hamas, cast their votes against the measure, joined by eight other nations
