The Fedral Government of Nigeria has alertedl that heavy rainfall between 24 and 28 September 2025 that may lead to flooding in 15 states and 69 locations.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Ministry of environment made this known in a flood alert on Wednesday.
The Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani said part of the Ministry’s routine early-warning system aimed to preventing loss of lives and property during the peak of the rainy season.
Flooding remains a recurring natural disaster in Nigeria, displacing thousands of people annually, damaging infrastructure and undermining food security.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency, no fewer than 232 persons have lost their lives, while 121,224 others have been displaced following floods that swept through parts of the country as of September 20, 2025.
The data also showed that at least 339,658 people were affected so far, with 681 sustaining various degrees of injuries.
The FEW centre noted that, “Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in 15 states across the country between 24th and 28th September, 2025. This may lead to flooding in the following locations and their environs.
“Adamawa (Farkumo, Jimeta, Mayo-Belwa, Wuro Bokki, Yola); Anambra (Ogbakuba); Bayelsa (Amassoma, Ikpidama, Kalama, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Odi, Odoni, Ogbia, Oloibiri, Oporoma, Otouke, Peremabiri, Sagbama, Yenagoa); Borno (Damasak) Delta (Abigborodo, Aboh, Abraka, Agbor, Asaba, Forcados, Koko, Okoloba, Okpo-Krika, Patani, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri, Umugboma, Umukwata, Umuchi-Utchi); Edo (Benin City, Okada).
“Imo (Egbema, Oguta); Kano (Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tudun-Wada, Wudil); Katsina (Jibia); Ondo (Akure, Ikare, Ita-Ogbolu); Oyo (Iseyin, Oyo); Rivers (Ahoada, Itu); Sokoto (Isa, Shagari); Taraba (Bandawa, Gembu, Ngaruwa, Serti); and Zamfara (Anka, Bungudu, Bukuyum, Gummi, Gusau, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi).
The Ministry urged stakeholders to take note of the warning, prepare adequately, and provide preventive actions
