The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been scheduled for fixed its next for July 24, 2025, in Abuja to decide party leadership issues, particularly the appointment of a substantive National Chairman..
The was announced on Monday by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Mr Festus Fuanter, following a session of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) held in the Federal Capital Territory.
Fuanter confirmed that the NEC would deliberate on critical leadership matters, including the formal ratification of the resignation of former National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down citing health-related reasons. The NEC will also consider the endorsement of a permanent replacement.
“As you all know, the National Executive Committee is the party’s highest decision-making body. Any leadership decision, including the appointment of a new chairman, must be approved by the NEC,” Fuanter stated.
He further explained that while the NEC may nominate and endorse a candidate, final ratification would still be subject to the party’s next national convention.
In the interim, the party has confirmed that Deputy National Chairman (North), Hon Ali Bukar Dalori, has been endorsed as Acting National Chairman, in line with constitutional provisions.
“Our constitution stipulates that if the chairman resigns, the deputy from the same zone steps in as acting chairman. We have fully complied with that provision,” Fuanter said.
The NWC also reviewed plans for forthcoming bye-elections in constituencies where vacancies have arisen following the resignation or death of sitting legislators. Fuanter noted that preparations are already underway.
The meeting also covered arrangements for internal party congresses across wards, local government areas, and state chapters. Timelines and modalities for the exercises are expected to be released shortly.
Addressing the press, Fuanter said the NWC’s acceptance of Ganduje’s resignation was unanimous, with members wishing him a speedy recovery and restful retirement from public duties.
Although Ganduje’s decision to step down followed internal pressure and speculation about his health, he has not yet issued a personal statement regarding his resignation.
Fuanter assured that the leadership transition remains smooth and in accordance with party rules. He reaffirmed the APC’s dedication to upholding internal democracy, strengthening national unity, and sustaining its grassroots political engagement ahead of future elections.
The July 24 NEC meeting is expected to attract senior party leaders from across the country, with indications that discussions may also explore the APC’s roadmap and positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections
