The Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has announced that the Federal Government of Nigeria has planned to establish independent super grids for each of the 19 northern states,

The announcement came after his meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja in response to a blackout that has plagued the northern region since October 21, raising significant concerns among stakeholders.

Adelabu confirmed that the President has ordered the acceleration of repair works to restore power. The new power strategy will implement a distributed power model that features embedded utility solar-scale sources. Each of the 20 states will be insulated from one another, enhancing resilience against outages.

The plan includes the installation of 100 megawatts of capacity per state, initially scalable from 50 megawatts. A super grid will serve as a backup for alternative power transmission, ensuring a reliable electricity supply.

Emphasizing the need for regionalized grids, Adelabu stated, “The world has moved beyond central grids; grids must be regionalized.” This approach aims to protect individual states from widespread outages and provide stable electricity to the northern part of Nigeria
