In celebration of his first year in office and to address overcrowding within correctional facilities, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has authorized the release of a select group of inmates.
“This action reflects our commitment to both upholding the law and promoting a more just and rehabilitative correctional system,” said Governor Radda.
“We are committed to decongesting our facilities while offering a path forward for those who have demonstrated good conduct.”
A statement from the office of the Chief Press Secretary to Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed dated 28 May, 2024 said the releases are authorized under the Governor’s power of clemency, outlined in Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution and relevant Katsina State laws.
A total of 12 inmates will be released or have their sentences reduced.
Category A to Enjoy Full Pardons: Seven inmates received full pardons, including those previously sentenced to death and amputation due to good conduct.
Category B and C to Enjoy Reduced Sentences:
Similarly, the death sentences on four other inmates were commuted to life imprisonment for good conduct. One other inmate’s life sentence was reduced to 10 years due to good conduct also.
Governor Radda has delegated authority to the Honorable Chief Judge of Katsina State to sign the release warrants for those receiving full pardons.
The Katsina Governor reaffirm his commitment to upholding the law while promoting justice and rehabilitation within the Katsina State correctional system.
This action is part of a broader effort by the Katsina State government to address prison overcrowding and promote rehabilitation within the correctional system.
