The United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain have formed a new maritime coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden from Houthi attacks.

They coalition,  Operation Prosperity Guardian, was announced by U K Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin  while on a visit to Bahrain on Monday.

The participating countries will conduct joint patrols and share intelligence to deter and respond to any threats in the region.

The move comes amid a surge of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels, especially those with Israeli links, in the Red Sea, a vital waterway for global trade and energy supplies.

The Yemeni faction supported by Iran has asserted accountability for various assaults employing drones, missiles, and naval mines, aiming at vessels like the Swan Atlantic, MSC Clara, and Galaxy Leader.

The assaults have interrupted regular maritime activities, leading certain international shipping and oil firms to redirect their shipments or halt operations in the Red Sea.

The attacks have sparked worries regarding their potential effects on the worldwide economy, as well as the security and stability of the area.

Austin said the coalition aims to “ensure freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce” in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and to “support regional partners in their efforts to counter malign activity and promote stability”.

He restated the United States’ dedication to ensuring Israel’s security and emphasized support for the Abraham Accords, which are agreements normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations.

Gantz expressed appreciation for the initiative, acknowledging Austin’s leadership and friendship.

He said the coalition is “an important step in the fight against Iranian aggression and terrorism” and “a clear message to the Houthis and their patrons that the international community will not tolerate their reckless and irresponsible behavior”.

He also conveyed optimism about additional nations joining the coalition and playing a part in fostering peace and prosperity in the region.
