The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Kaduna State University, Kaduna and Open Arts Development Foundation are delighted to have received the British Academy International Writing Workshops award to support early career researchers.
Over the course of two years, we will be working on ‘Amplifying Women’s Voices in Hausa Cultural Studies’ through Writing and Publishing Workshop for Early Career Women Academics from West Africa under the workshop team of Dr Carmen McCain, of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and Professor Ibrahim Malumfashi, of the Kaduna State University, Kaduna.
Women in northern Nigeria and other Hausa-speaking regions face academic and publishing barriers, most high profile cultural studies in northern Nigeria have been done by men and non-Africans. This hybrid workshop attached to the Hausa International Book and Arts Festival (HIBAF) will amplify the voices of West African female scholars by providing mentorship in the field of Hausa studies and building access to expert advice and training on how to publish.
We hope to stimulate professional networks, develop research partnerships, encourage skills development, provide advice on career development and promote the uptake of research emanating from women academics in the field of Hausa studies from West Africa.
