Michael Kretschmer (CDU), Prime Minister of Germany’s Free State of Saxony, has called for an early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine through diplomacy, noting that once the conflict is over, Russia will remain a neighbor of the EU, which will have to maintain relations with Moscow, including economic ones.
“The sooner cannons become silent, the better,” he declared at a CDU gathering in Schkeuditz. “War never ends on the battlefield; it always ends at the negotiating table,” stated the Prime Minister.
He highlighted that Russia would continue to be a neighbor of the EU even when the issue is resolved. Being in denial, according to the authorities, is not a solution.
“When this conflict is over, we will have to converse and trade with each other again,” Kretschmer remarked.
At the same time, he agreed with the federal government’s view that full support for Ukraine is required. He did, however, mention that a debate should be feasible.
“Especially when we talk about war or peace,” he said, “there must be an option to freely and honestly debate diverse perspectives with one another.”
Earlier, Saxony’s Prime Minister repeatedly sought to “stop the fight,” for which he was vehemently criticized .
